At Captain Shaw’s, lunchtime is an important part of the school day. Our meals are cooked here in school, and we want the food we serve to be tasty, nutritious and something children genuinely look forward to eating.

A Menu Shaped by Our Children

Our menu has not simply been created for the children – our children have helped to create it.

They have been involved in trying different dishes, sharing their views and helping us develop a menu that balances healthy choices with food that children enjoy. Listening to their feedback helps us continue to improve what we offer.

This is another small example of how we want children to have a genuine voice in the life of their school: making choices, expressing opinions respectfully and seeing that their contribution can make a difference.

Freshly Prepared in School

Having our meals prepared in-house means that food is part of our school community rather than something separate from it.

It also connects naturally with the learning taking place across Captain Shaw’s. Through our developing community allotment and garden, children are learning about growing, caring for the natural world and the journey from planting to plate. We want them to understand that the food on a plate begins somewhere – and to develop healthy, positive relationships with food as they grow.

Dietary and Individual Needs

We want every child to be able to enjoy lunchtime safely and feel fully included.

If your child has a food allergy, medical requirement, religious requirement or other dietary need, please speak to us. We will work with families to understand individual needs and make appropriate arrangements.
