Victory in Europe Day - 75th Anniversary - Friday 8th May 2020
Today is a Bank Holiday to Celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the ending of the war in Europe. Many events had been planned for this occasion, which cannot now go ahead due to the pandemic. So today's activities will give you a focus on VE day if you would like to use them. Choose which VE day activities you would like to do and have some fun. Upload your pictures to your portfolio on Class Dojo.
Design a Medal Activity
Read the information about VE Day with your child so that they understand what is being remembered and celebrated. Read the information about war medals and look at the examples of war medals
from World War II. Talk about the questions on the slides.
Your child can then design a war medal for a member of the army, navy or air force returning home after World War II. They could use the paper worksheet or make their own medal using fabric, cardboard or anything else you have at home.
The final task is to write a letter to a serviceman or woman, thanking them for their bravery, using the writing paper included.
Can you use any of these words in your letter?
brave bravery courage grateful sacrifice celebrate VE Day war
Plan your own VE Day Celebration
Plan your own celebration for VE Day. Perhaps you could have a special lunch or tea party and decorate your house or garden with bunting and flags. You could write menus of what you are going to eat. Perhaps you could send invitations to the family members you live with, asking them to come to the celebrations.
Use the bunting and flag templates to help decorate your home for VE Day. To make them, you will need: colouring pens or pencils; glue, sticky tape or staples; a stick or lolly stick; and string or wool. You could, of course, design your own!
World War 2 - Research
If your child is interested in finding out more about the Second World War, they could try these activities. Your child could research using books or the internet and create fact files, poster, paintings or drawings.

English Task
Your task today is to write a fact file for an Atlantic Marine Animal. Next week you will be writing a Just So story like How the Whale got his Throat. You will be writing about one of the animals in the Atlantic Ocean. Think about which animal you would like to write about. Today will help you to get to know your animal really well - so that you will be able to write a story imagining how it came to be the way it is. Use the template below to help you organise your fact file.
Science/ Topic
Check your food chain or food web diagram. We need to make sure that the arrows between the animals and plants are pointing in the correct direction. The arrows show the flow of energy. The animal that is consuming is gaining energy from the animal or plant that it is eating. So the arrows point up the food chain. Check your work and improve it if you need to.

English Learning - You may need an adult to help with the reading.
Today you are going to listen to a 'Just So' story written by Rudyard Kipling about 125 years ago. Rudyard Kipling wrote his 'Just So' stories to help his daughter get to sleep.
First read the preface in the Rudyard Kipling resource.
This contains the preface to his book of 'Just So' Stories. A preface is an introduction to a book written by the author.
Then read the opening to the story. Discuss what you understand and what you do not understand with your parent.
Next watch and listen to the story 'How the Whale got his Throat', following the link below.
Watch it more than once if you need to.
Finally write 3 questions which would help you understand the story better.
You will be returning to the story tomorrow.
Topic / Science Work
What does a whale really eat - investigate Food Chain's/Webs of marine animals.
Following on from your research on the Atlantic Ocean last week - you are now going to find out how the animals in the Atlantic Ocean are interdependent.
Choose an animal that lives in the Atlantic Ocean.
Research:
1) What it eats
2) What eats it (if anything)
3) If it feeds on other animals - what do they eat
4) If it is eaten by another animal - what eats that animal
How far can you go? - draw a diagram of what you find out.

Have your maths book ready to do your workings. If you don't know the answer - use your knowledge to eliminate the questions that cannot be correct. Try to complete all the questions so that your score can be registered - even if you guess some. Don't worry about how you get on today - we will used it to adjust the questions next time.

Musical Activity - This is an activity which will make you smile and extend your knowledge of musical instruments. Follow the instructions in the document below. I really encourage you to watch the piece of music right through - it is worth it! It will make you smile - it might make you want to dance or conduct. Maybe you could get your own instrument out or make a drum. The Conductor is a very special man who has set up an orchestra for very poor children in South America: these children would never have had access to musical instruments without him. The most famous example is his youth orchestra in Venezuela.
