At Captain Shaw's, we believe that children learn best when they are in school, learning alongside their teachers and friends. Attendance at school will therefore always be our priority.

There may, however, be exceptional circumstances where attendance at school is not possible but a child is well enough and able to continue learning. In these situations, remote education may be considered so that disruption to learning is minimised.

Our Approach

Where remote education is appropriate, we will aim to provide learning that:

• reflects, as far as possible, the curriculum being taught in school;
• is appropriate to the child's age, stage of learning and individual circumstances;
• provides clear instructions and suitable resources;
• enables children to maintain important knowledge and skills while they are away from school; and
• allows appropriate communication between home and school.

Inclusion and Individual Needs

Just as we do in school, we recognise that children may need different things in order to participate and succeed.

Where a child has SEND or other additional needs, we will consider appropriate adaptations, resources and support. We will also take account of children's age, independence, access to technology and individual family circumstances when deciding what remote education should look like.

Our ambition for children's learning remains high, but the way they access that learning may need to be different.

When Will Remote Education Be Provided?

Remote education is not an alternative to attending school and will only be considered when attendance is not possible but a child is able to continue learning.

Because circumstances vary, arrangements will be discussed with families and planned according to the individual situation and likely length of absence.

If your child is unable to attend school, please follow our usual absence procedures. We will contact you if remote education is appropriate and explain how learning will be provided.
