Our school uniform is part of our shared identity at Captain Shaw's. It helps children feel that they belong to our school community and provides a simple, practical way of dressing for school.
We also believe that uniform should be comfortable, inclusive and affordable. We therefore keep our requirements simple and do not require any item of uniform or PE kit to carry the school logo. Families are free to buy suitable generic items from any retailer that works for them.
Children should wear:
School-branded clothing is entirely optional. A plain green sweatshirt or cardigan and plain white polo shirt are equally acceptable.
For PE, children should have:
Our PE kit is deliberately simple so that children can participate comfortably and families can purchase items from a wide range of retailers.
No child should be unable to take part in PE or other school activities because they do not have a particular branded item.
Outdoor learning is an important part of life at Captain Shaw's. Depending on the activity and weather, it is helpful for children to have access to:
These do not need to be school-branded or bought from a particular retailer.
For families who would like clothing carrying the Captain Shaw's logo, branded uniform is available from:
Ferguson's, Millom
Identity, Barrow-in-Furness
Buying branded uniform is optional. Families may instead purchase suitable plain uniform from supermarkets, high-street shops, online retailers or other suppliers.
We want good-quality uniform to be reused wherever possible. This helps families, reduces waste and makes our approach to uniform more sustainable.
At the end of each academic year, we hold a uniform swap, where families can pass on good-quality uniform that children have outgrown and take items that will be useful for the year ahead. Everyone is welcome to take part.
You do not need to wait for the annual uniform swap if you need help with uniform. Please contact the school office on 01229 718279 or speak to a member of staff. We will always try to help.
We are also very happy to receive donations of clean, good-quality Captain Shaw's uniform that children have outgrown.
We recognise that every child and family is different. We will make reasonable adjustments to our uniform expectations where these are needed because of a child's SEND, disability, medical needs, religion or other individual circumstances.
If replacing or obtaining uniform is difficult at any time, please talk to us. A problem with uniform should not become a barrier to a child attending school, feeling that they belong or taking part fully in school life.
We will always try to find a practical and supportive solution.
Children may wear small stud earrings, provided they can be safely removed when required for PE and other activities.
Make-up and nail varnish should not normally be worn to school.
If you have any questions about uniform, including its cost or your child's individual needs, please contact the school office on 01229 718279. We will be happy to help.
